Haunted Love seemed to have carved their own niche as the comicbook pop exponents of the Dunedin music scene, for connoisseurs, cool kids and nerds everywhere. Made up of Geva Downey and Rainy McMaster, they have been making for music for 5 years now. I spoke with them recently about being a supporting act, their latest gig at 12 Below and all about them.

DMC: So what has Haunted Love been up to recently? Any gigs or cool experiences as a band, aside from this new album in the works and the ‘Popular’ gig?

Haunted Love: We've been bouncing from experience to experience; we started the year by opening for one of our favourite bands in the world, The Handsome Family, at Chicks. They were a huge inspiration to us when we first started, it was an incredibly wonderful, defining moment in Haunted Love history when they invited us on stage to duet with them on their song 24 Hour Store. We've been trying a lot of new things this year, learning new instruments...

DMC: What musicians do you admire and look up to for inspiration?

HL: Well, mostly each other! Of course we have our favourite bands and artists but the inspiration that fuels our songwriting comes from the admiration we have for each other.

DMC: Can you give me the lowdown on this upcoming album? Will Tex Houston be engineering it again? Will this one be along the same lines as Diamond in Darkness City or is there a new tack being taken musically or thematically?

HL: This upcoming album is actually the one we started before Darkness in Diamond City. We recorded the songs with Ed Cake so they are very different production-wise to the work we've done with Tex, for example they are a lot more synth-centric. The working title is Teen Fiction and thematically is it is very different as well. Imagine flying over the a glittering city scape at night, alone and high on prescription medication. That's Darkness in Diamond City. Now imagine walking through a mardi gras parade, with every hero and villain from your high school years doing a synchronised dance routine behind you while you're on a sugar rush from caramel popcorn and cherry cola - that's Teen Fiction.

DMC: How will you be releasing your new album? When is it due out?

HL: We don't really know how we'll release it yet - we have a lot of ideas/options though we'll have a better idea when it's finished. Release date? A very urgent A.S.A.P! We don't want to keep people waiting any longer.

DMC: What formats will it be coming out in? What’s the process you through to decide the artwork?

HL: Oh, artwork! We get so excited about that! Aside from actually recording the music, that's the best part! A lot of the artwork ideas and the general aesthetic for Teen Fiction have been building and solidifying since the first songs were written. The content of the music absolutely defines the direction of the artwork and visual images play a huge part in our songwriting process - it's pretty difficult for us to find where one starts and the other begins; they're intertwined. That's part of the reason we like making CDs; even though they're so uncool, you get to have the artwork in a more tangible, personable form. But today people want so much more variety with how they can access the musicso we're trying to be as inclusive as possible and we're investigating further formats such as RTD, PDF, microchip, limited edition phonographs, flash cards, spreadsheets, bedsheets etc.

DMC: What will you be doing to support the album’s release?

HL: Well, obviously it would be ideal to have the release on a luxury ocean liner, anchored in the Otago Harbour on a balmy summer evening. Everyone wearing white Dolce and Gabbana dresses and drinking pina coladas while beautiful, beautiful drag queens sing karaoke versions of the songs and then we'd embark on an anti-clockwise circuit of New Zealand lasting all summer long... but we'll let you know the details closer to the time!
