KRISTIN Nielsen, of the Subz `n' Breakz ([SBK]) crew, is a veteran serving on Dunedin's drum `n' bass scene.
Along with his partner Anar Khan (Kali), DJ Adz and Rhyas, Nielsen (28) will celebrate SBK's ninth birthday next month, cementing it as a stayer in what can be an inconstant industry.

He has built a foundation for himself and [SBK] by playing in support for visiting internationals, hosting a radio show and producing under their self-titled recording label.

Working in with, and around, Dunedin's other drum `n' bass crews means all are extended without extinguishing each other, he said.

"It's quite friendly competition. It's quite co-operative,'' Nielsen said.

Setting up a website and database has been vital to the promotion side of [SBK]. It has also helped secure a distributor for the five-track Enter the Blue EP, he made with Tim Webb, under the duo's production name [Vanadis].

As drum `n' bass continued to diversify, the genre would not only survive here but keep on growing, Nielsen predicted.

"In Dunedin it never kind of over-extended. It's small steps getting bigger and bigger.''
