Press Release:

Knives at Noon EP Release and NZ Tour

Knives at Noon, formed in August 2007, are a progressive three-piece electro synth rock band consisting of Andrew Ketels (guitar vocals), Oli Wilson, (Syth/Synth bass) and Tim Couch (Drums). Their electronic flavoured dance-rock music is a product of a unique creative process; each member lives in a different city - Dunedin, Auckland and Papua New Guinea. Using the latest digital technologies they collaborate via post and internet in order to construct grooves, melodies, beats and bass-lines. The results are highly detailed arrangements reflecting each member intellectual background. All are university graduates, with Oli, their synth player, currently undertaking a PhD in music. Their physical dislocation from each other meant that getting into recording studio after being 'together' for only a short time was both practical and essential. Their debut EP is being released this May, and is supported by an NZ tour.
Knives at Noon have implemented an innovated creative process – and have adopted a new licensing system that is revolutionising the way music is shared and created globally. This aligns with their creative philosophies, and has led them to expand into the electronic genre without even touching a re-mix or DJ programme. This flexibility is a result of Knives at Noon’s decision to allow all their studio recordings to be available online, thus allowing producers and DJs from around the globe to freely remix their material. This is made possible (and legally legitimate) under the new ‘Creative Commons’ licensing system.

Knives at Noon currently have producers and DJ’s in the UK, Australia and NZ remixing their tracks (producers such as Vanadin in Dunedin, Module in Wellington, DarKist in the UK and Dean Lawz in Australia). This original concept is reflected in the re-mixed arrangements, which due to the now-global subsistence of their music, has a fresh global and original sound. In short, a ‘Creative Commons’ licence makes it legal for producers and DJ’s around the world to ‘sample’ the music, which under traditional licensing arrangements is illegal without permission, resulting in expensive litigation, and is unrealistic for local independent artists. Knives at Noon were also motivated to get ‘Creative Commons’ licences because it enables their music’s creative life to continue beyond the release of their EP, and extends the creative process beyond what is currently considered possible.
Knives at Noon are taking full artistic advantage of latest wave of musical globalisation, proving that through the use of digital recording technology, the creative process of music making has no geographic limitations.
