Dunedin’s Matariki Festival Applications Open
24 APRIL 2012
Dunedin’s Puaka Matariki Festival will take place this year over 3 weeks, from 18 June to 8 July. The Festival heralds the Maori New Year with the appearance of the South Island’s unique Puaka star and the rising of the Matariki star cluster.
Festival coordinator Josh Thomas said last year’s calendar of over 40 events attracted upwards of 5000 Dunedinites. “The Festival has some fantastic annual events which are now well known as part of Matariki. We’re hoping they’ll return and we’re also looking for fresh, new ideas to come forth.”
Thomas wants the Festival to grow and expand this year. “The Puaka Matariki Festival is a wonderfully diverse collection of community events,” he said. “Each year a huge cross-section of the Dunedin community come together to organise their own activities and gatherings. The wonderful thing about Matariki is that it’s a celebration unique to where we are in the world.”
Application forms to take part can be completed online until 5pm, Friday 4 May and Thomas encourages anyone with an idea that connects to Puaka Matariki to get involved. Those interested in holding an event can also apply for funding assistance. Application forms and further details can be found on the website: www.matarikidunedin.co.nz or by contacting the Coordinator, Josh Thomas, on 03 474 3588.
