Biff Merchants Final Gig

Postby monki on Thu Sep 03, 2009 3:34 pm

We are taking an indefinite sabbatical as a number of us are planning to catch aeroplanes and go to places we haven't been to before. So if you'd like to catch us for the very last time (one or some of us are never coming back due to student loans and inescapable drug debt) this is your chance.

It will be held at upstairs Cook. Some of you may gasp as I did, but let it sink in... think of the cheap beer, the great space available, and the vicinity to knox pharmacy for that late night pseudoephedrine smash and grab.

We are hopefully recording a live album from it, depending on how drunk we get and how good the set sounds.

We will have some other [forkin] fantastic bands playing who I will post on as we confirm them. Keep watching this space.

gig will be held Saturday, September 26

Love You

Sigh. A sad occasion.

I'm down with the Cook. You forgot to mention the opportunity it provides for picking up classy first year girls.

Presumably such dubious temptations will be less likely with an upstairs gig. Despite The Cook's continual besmirching of it's former reputation as a venue, the upstairs bar remains a good space. Mind you, I am disappointed to read that I won't be able to buy a pint of Actifed.

Have I been upstairs? A long, long time ago. Back when upstairs was an actual venue (Radio One even had an end of year party there), and the downstairs corner bar was populated by crusty bohemians... and the rest was a general purpose drinking hole. Which makes it so long ago it may have been in a previous life.

None of it was what you would call classy, but it was miles better than the meat-market/swill-barn it deteriorated into under successive managements. So it's nice to hear that upstairs will host bands again - especially with such a line-up :)

part of the reason for choosing upstairs cook was so that people may see the potential in a new venue (as [fork] we need them) and cook management may see the potential in hosting bands there. When looking for places we wanted to host it somewhere we hadn't played before. we thought about halls (logistical nightmare), or places out of town (another logistical nightmare) or somewhere that could be seen as a venue for future gigs that does not hold regular gigs currently. If it turns out that bands can consequently line up paying gigs there in the future then the major desired outcome of holding the gig there would have been fulfilled. If anyone turns their noses up about it then they have missed the point and don't have foresight. The crown was gross, arc was gross, cook is gross. There may be some undesirables that spill over but that is the nature of our town and there is no use in hiding from it. As adrenochrome says, it was a hub for gigs in the past and why not attempt to reclaim some of our history? If anyone can think of a better venue to use then so be it... but the beer is cheaper and in order to do that they have to survive by having a bar full of [stegosaurus] below.

that accidentally turned into a rant... sorry

haha figured as much, although for not having been up there in ages you seem to have a pretty solid idea of what it is (meat-market). I can't wait to see the stream of pissed off sweet [bunts] angry at uppie cook being closed. You guys are fags, maaaan.

Hell, it didn't require going through the door to work that out - walking by was more than enough. However I did go in downstairs a few months ago to the Walk The Line/Outsiders/Bad Sav gig - and yeah, the clientele and tone (I won't call flatter it by calling it 'atmosphere' )was entirely what i expected, and I felt sorry for the staff who have to deal with it and who certainly earn every cent of their pay (to call the guys' toilet 'noxious' would be a compliment).

However if the bulk of the meat-market crowd stay downstairs, happily tottering around to a soundtrack of Lowest Common Denominator dross, then I see no reason why the upstairs space cannot be reclaimed for live music and more discerning/civilised punters.

We'll certainly see
regarding the 26th i don't care if all the douche bags of Today, Tomorrow, Timaru are there. if the cook wanna try an make it a venue then they'll have to keep an eye on the bad eggs an toss em out. whoever it is that are starting [shirt].
personally i dont think there'll be a problem with anything on the 26th, if anything it might interest a bunch of new people, if not, no skin off mine. its going to interesting none the less to see how this night goes, i had a look on the facebook invite an there's well over 100 people confirmed

does anyone know how the Ddub gig went the other day?

on a side note my old man used to play upstairs at the cook back in the 70's, i think its pretty neat that i get the opportunity to do so myself :)
