Have I missed the boat?

A general discussion about Dunedin's artists and industry.
Not gigs: that discussion happens in "Events."

Have I missed the boat?

So is everyone using FB now and not bothering with the DMC forums? Seems like it.

Keeping the faith, huh?

Actually, Richard and I are fully reworking the whole site and we're open to input on what happens to the community section. Obviously tighter social network integration will help, inline comments on things and so forth but we're keen to move away from reliance on any one platform.

All good. I like the local touch and feel to DMC, which doesn't have all the distractions of FB. Like Backos I feel it is probably cyclical in nature and old and new posters may return in droves when DMC is 're-discovered'. And as you once messaged me Evan, the forums are only a part of the whole thing which is probably still well looked at and referred to.

Apart from the annoying ads this site is pretty much excellent and well laid out,so, as ever well done and thank you for maintaining this awesome site.

I wanted to click "like" on one of those posts above. Wrong place, eh?

I haven't posted here for a bit. Or on two other band forums I used to frequent. So it's nothing personal DMC. Yes, Faecesboak sucks in so many ways BUT most important thing is you get to choose your friends and therefore who you discuss stuff with.

I got sick of forums (fora?) - not just this one - for the anonymous negative [shirt], snarkiness, petty jealousies and put-downs, abuse etc. from no-hopers and trolls. It was a relief to get away from that - I have heard many others say the same thing. Most of those I got on with on those other sites are FB friends now anyway. Anyone pisses me off on FB with negative, abusive rubbish gets defriended. I've only had to do it once though in 4 years.

I think a forum like this still has its place though and if FB makes any more of an arse of itself people will start to gravitate back. I think that the anonymity of a forum is a bad thing. People can be nasty dorks when they don't have to put a name to their words. I don't accept FB friend requests from people I don't know. Aliases are OK if they tell me who they really are.

Having said that... I remain, anonymously, Beakbeat here :? But y'all know who I am, anyway, right?

I still think there is a place for the cut and thrust of local debate.

In the 'perfect' world of FB we 'choose' our friends, but there is the danger in only hearing the 'ho-hum'.

I like DMC because it can challenge your opinion, expand your understanding and allow you to converse on local issues in a non FB way.

Interaction on the web with people you don't necessarily know is a good thing. Even trolls are amusing, if only because they display stupidity and ridiculous thoughts on a grand scale. Though I sense the trolls have disappeared from DMC, so our long planned 'period of quiteness' has perhaps worked.

See the cut and thrust of debate is alive and well on DMC!

Now the above would be a great button to choose on FB.

Good stuff. This is not sterile old FB after all. Personally I rarely post on FB, I do update our band FB page, but don't find much debate and discussion on there to do with the local scene...probably because of my choices and being a crusty, unloved pirate.
The Dunedin Music thingy on there is ok, but generally used to promote something rather than engaging in true 'thread' follow through.
So DMC has a place...and I guess you are reading it.

Ps to Evan, can you have a look at the Dogs page please, I haven't been able to update it for ages, even though it says it has been updated recently, as we have new contact details etc. I just get a blank screen. Ta. I sent a PM I think.
