Next to take the stage was Bang! Bang! Eche! who made us want to party like it was 1999. Their raw stage presence was well received by the crowd. They defiantly pulled the crowd onto the dance floor with their frenetic brand of dance-punk. Front man Zach Doney was a highlight of the night with his intense stage presence. There were a number of times when he got amongst it with the crowd blurring the lines of the usual crowd/band relationship which bought another dimension to their set. Having only ever heard recording of this band we were unsure of what to expect but these kids were so good they almost made us forget we were in 10bar and that must be a sign that the music is good. They opened their set with ‘Fingers in the Till’ and we were lucky enough to hear ‘Fist Full of Dollars’ which is off their highly anticipated soon to be released EP, ‘SONIC DEATH CUNTTTT’ due out early November. The energy they had made us wish they had played for longer but all good things must unfortunately come to an end.
To describe the Checks’ show at 10bar as a let-down would be a bit of an understatement. Having seen the Devonport 5 piece prior to their Get Off the Stage Tour in October they were lacking in a certain spark which we could only put down to the sterile vibe that 10bar produced and the fact that it was the final date of the tour. But even still they were lacking in the raw energy that we have seen them crank out in 9,000 seat arenas and various summertime festivals. Opener ‘Let Your Lover Know’ did not provide a welcome chance for the crowd to expend some of their pent up energy after waiting more than half an hour to come on stage, but by the time ‘Get Off the Stage’ and ‘Crows’ were released the crowd was willing to forgive them for their attempted diva antics . The Checks’ set was riddled with sound problems that resulted in lead singer, Ed Knowles’ voice being lost in a sea of noise; again this can only be attributed to 10bar’s terrible PA system and lack of acoustics.
All in all despite the diva antics and sound troubles of The Checks it was a pretty good show. While it took a while to get over the fact that we were in 10bar the quality of the music eventually made us forget this. These three bands do however present an energy that will make you want to get up and boogie.
