Lovely heartfelt fireside folk from Tui winning Dunedin trio
Dunedin trio Delgirl won the folk music Tui for their first album, Two,
Maybe Three, Days Ride. They've followed that up quickly with their second
Porchlight. It's an equally enjoyable set of tunes that reflect an
underexposed and sometimes undernourished aspect of the local music
environment. On the strength of the majority of the songs here, more
pastoral styles of music deserve a great deal more attention than they're
generally afforded. Recorded in Owaka, in the deep south's Catlins, with
Windy City Struggler and music critic Nick Bollinger in a producing role,
Porchlight quickly charms its way into your consciousness. Between Erin
Morton, Lynn Vare, and Deirdre Newell are a range of voices that combine
into something that is the perfect fireside companion. With acoustic
instruments, simple song structures, and glorious vocal harmonies the trio
conjure up a raft of largely contemplative moods, yet Porchlight is not
really overly introspective. It's more just baldly honest, from the heart
music, simply rendered and all the more effective for the lack of fussiness.
This is music to share, in good times and bad.
