For those who hadn’t seen State Of Mind live act, welcome to New Zealand’s veteran Drum & Bass dynamic duo. Once again State Of Mind pleased the crowd of dark hoods and sweaty figures, with MC Woody spitting the rhymes alongside them.
Personally I am not a fan of MCs - a bit of a purist I might say. If the music is good enough then who needs someone rapping over it, disrupting the flow? MCing over the darker electronica genre’s such as Drum & Bass or DubStep is a fine art, where often less is more. However MC Woody has found the fine balance between keeping the crowd interested between the sometimes monotonous breakdowns and not pissing people of with the sound of his voice. I add that this is a very fine line, kudos MC Woody.
State of Mind regular appearances at large festivals has improved their live show immensely. A Well thought out setlist and flawless mixing brought the crowd into a frenzy when big tunes like ‘Sunking’ were dropped. It was not the biggest crowd State Of Mind have played to; in fact an unusually empty ReFuel surprised me. Nevertheless I find an intimate and personal show is where we get to see the more experimental DJing from State Of Mind. Nothing wrong with trying a few new tricks! I was pleased to see tracks from their new album ‘Faster Than Light’ (2009) compliment their already vast range of hard hitting beats. It’s great to see it hasn’t taken long for fans to learn the lyrics ‘City on Fire’.
Despite an unfortunate technical difficulty mid-way and smaller than usual crowd, State Of Mind brought down the roof once again with awe inspiring show. My only request: bring an extra 30,000Watts of bass next time! A solid 7/10.
