PRESS RELEASE: Dunedin Jazz & Cabaret Festival
The proposed dates for the inaugural Dunedin Jazz & Cabaret Festival are the 16 – 22 October 2015, and then biannually. Be sure to diary these dates! This exciting and unique event is a first for Dunedin and is managed by the newly formed Dunedin Jazz, Cabaret & Performing Arts Charitable Trust.
Discussions with some of our local, national and international artists, and local partners, have already been taking place and a festival is taking shape. Everyone is excited about the project and, funding contingent - and with buckets of good will - all want to make this a successful 7-day programme of events. Let's make it happen!
A vision for the project is to present an intimate and bespoke festival celebrating jazz and cabaret, which has a distinct Dunedin flavour and utilises some of our wonderful heritage buildings. With this regard, I am pleased to announce that the 2015 festival will be held at the iconic Playhouse Theatre - one of Dunedin’s quaint and quirky venues that will offer a bohemian, house-concert, club intimacy in the upstairs bar and a small-scale theatre environment for an array of larger performances and headline concerts. In addition, I am pleased to announce that a programme of events will take place at several iconic venues in Port Chalmers on Sunday 18th October.
The 2015 programme aims to offer a range of jazz styles from: original and contemporary, through to experimental, through to interpretations of the classics, along with cabaret-inspired music presentations. The programme will also see collaborations with Dunedin poets, dancers, sound and performance artists, actors and comedians, as well as provide an educational component for the community. The festival environment is bound to elicit an infectious and vibrant vibe for audience and artist alike, with room for late night jazz jams at the Playhouse Theatre club!
A festival webiste is coming soon and the programme will be launched at the beginning of September... In the meantime, LIKE us on Facebook to keep up with news and our story as it unfolds, or hit the reply button to join the email list.
