The NZSO gathers together some of Australasia’s finest singing talent in this performance of Verdi’s moving and majestic Requiem. Composed to mark the passing of two great Italian heroes - the composer Gioachino Rossini and the author and poet Alessandro Manzoni - Verdi’s Requiem is an overwhelming expression of grief, and yet it is reassuring in its message of comfort.
Having wowed audiences in the 2012 performances of The Valkyrie, our very own Margaret Medlyn and Australian soprano Lisa Harper-Brown return to showcase again their stunning and sweeping vocal techniques. The acclaimed Australian tenor Rosario La Spina and the inimitable Jud Arthur complete our quartet of soloists.
Verdi’s Requiem is filled with recognisable musical moments, from the dramatic and despairing ‘Dies Irae’ with its thunderous percussion and brass to the imploring beauty of the ‘Lacrimosa’ that grows in its intensity with every phrase. Once considered too ‘operatic’ for the church, this work is filled with Verdi’s trademark glorious melodies. This is a work of great personal significance for the composer, and for many who have since come to know this passionate and glorious requiem.
